I don't usually post beer reviews on oppo, but when I do ...you will enjoy the sh*t out of it.

Heavy Seas: The Greater Pumpkin

Description: Imperial Pumpkin Ale aged in oak barrels. 10% abv.

Smell: Up there with the best of the pumpkin beers. Very pumpkin pie.

Color: Poured into a tulip; it has an amber color, with creamy off white head.

Taste: Initial taste of sweet pumpkin and spices followed by a strong taste of oaky alcohol.

Verdict: 98/100 for style. If you're looking for a solid pumpkin ale and Southern Tier's Pumking isn't strong enough for you; this is up their with such releases like Hoppin Frog's Frog's Hollow and Rogue's GYO Pumpkin Patch Ale.

I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin pie beers.

Almanac Brewery had a fantastic dark pumpkin sour though. It is a shame that they only produce such limited quantities though and pretty much when they are gone they are gone.

Heavy Seas makes some good stuff. I like Davy Jones Lager and Powder Monkey and another I cant think of the name of.

It actually was really popular in the 1700 and 1800s as a way to flavor beer. Back when beer was drunk at every meal as it was safer than water. People had to flavor it somehow as plain ale or lager would get really boring when served at all meals.

I wouldn't call it a pumpkin pie beer; I was referring to the smell of pumpkin pie.

Dark Pumpkin Sour sounds good to me right now, for sure though!

This may actually have been my first impression of Heavy Seas: I was impressed!

There kind of already is. Use the tag: Beerlopnik. Though, I am with you. I wish the user interface of oppo (and kinja blogs in general) were better organized into at least a few categories with in the main blog ...as it is there is too much white noise sometimes.

I honestly wasn't a big fan. It seemed split between a pure pumpkin pie beer( Schlafly, Souther Tier Pumpking) and the more fall style, spiced beers(Riverhorse Pumpkin and Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin). The Hoppin Frog has been excellent in years past but I haven't seen it this year yet.

Really? Batches do differ year to year for some breweries ...maybe Heavy Seas is one of those? I haven't had the Frog's Hollow this year either, but this was every bit as good as I recall that to be, but a little stronger even (in a good way).

This was the first year I had the Heavy Seas. Have you had the Dogfish Head this year yet? It is in a new bottle, but I think it is even better than last years.

I haven't had the Dogfish Head this year ...and I'm not sure if I ever have. I recall that someone(s) told me it wasn't a true pumpkin ale and not all that good. I am a fan of Dogfish Head though. How did you like it?

The Dogfish head Punkin is described as a brown ale brewed with brown sugar and spices. I thought this year's was fantastic.

Well I haven't ever been disappointed by Dogfish, so I may have to try it!
